Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy designed to help individuals process and heal from traumatic and distressing life experiences.
EMDR is grounded in the understanding that trauma can disrupt the brain’s natural information-processing system, leaving memories stored in a fragmented and emotionally charged form. When these memories are triggered, they may continue to generate intense emotional, cognitive, and physical reactions in the present.
During EMDR therapy, clients are supported in briefly accessing traumatic or disturbing memories while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation, most commonly through guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones. This dual-attention process is understood to facilitate adaptive memory processing, allowing experiences to be integrated in a way that reduces emotional distress and restores a sense of psychological balance. As treatment progresses, traumatic memories often feel less vivid and less emotionally overwhelming, and associated beliefs and body responses tend to shift.
EMDR is internationally recognized as an effective treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder and is endorsed by major health and clinical bodies. The EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) establishes and maintains rigorous standards for training, certification, and ethical practice to ensure EMDR is delivered safely and effectively by qualified clinicians.
At Ontario Psychotherapy Center, EMDR therapy is available as part of our trauma-informed treatment offerings. Clients who are interested in EMDR are welcome to request this approach specifically when inquiring about or booking an appointment.
